Question

Does ChatGPT store the data you paste?

Yes. Whatever you type or paste into ChatGPT is sent to and stored on OpenAI’s servers. On personal accounts it may also be used to improve OpenAI’s models by default — you can opt out, but the data has still left your device. For sensitive files, the reliable fix is not to send the personal data at all.

Bottom line. You can reduce retention with OpenAI’s controls, but you can’t take back what you sent. PII Shield keeps the sensitive data on your machine: anonymize locally, use the AI on the anonymized copy, restore the originals on your computer.

What OpenAI does with your data

  • It is transmitted and stored. Your prompts and files go to OpenAI’s servers to generate a response and are retained according to their policies.
  • Personal accounts (Free, Plus, Pro): conversations may be used to train the models by default, unless you switch off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data Controls.
  • Business tiers (Team, Enterprise, API): not used for training by default.
  • Opt-out is forward-looking: it stops future use but doesn’t remove data already used in training.

The stronger fix: don’t send the sensitive data

Controls reduce risk, but the surest protection is to keep the personal data off the AI service entirely. PII Shield removes personal data from documents, spreadsheets, email and audio on your own computer, so nothing sensitive is transmitted in the first place — and you can still use any AI tool on the anonymized copy. Frequently asked questions

Yes. Your conversations are sent to and stored on OpenAI’s servers. On personal accounts (Free, Plus, Pro) they may also be used to improve OpenAI’s models by default, unless you turn model training off in Data Controls.

On personal accounts, by default yes — you can opt out in Settings → Data Controls. On business tiers (Team, Enterprise and the API), OpenAI does not train on your data by default. Turning training off is forward-looking and does not remove data already used.

Temporary Chat is not saved to your history and is not used to train the models, which reduces retention. But the text is still transmitted to and processed by OpenAI to generate the reply.

Don’t send the sensitive data in the first place. Anonymize the file locally with PII Shield, use the AI on the anonymized copy, and restore the originals on your own computer.
